Zanmi Lakay’s 2009 Report and Accomplishments:

  • The Education Fund was born and includes our new School Sponsorship Program along with our established Teens in Transition Program. With the support of many people, we have successfully sponsored eight young children who otherwise would not be able to attend school for the 2009/10 year. Two brothers who were orphaned are now going to school for the first time. Five of the recipients are children of children I knew when I first visited Haiti.
  • We gave out over 60 Care Bags, food, backpacks, clothing, and supplies to kids living on the streets and in abandoned buildings.
  • A group of boys that organized their own boxing club received a duffel bag full of donated supplies including protective gear, jump ropes, gloves, hand wraps, and booties.
  • Jean Marc and Papouche (who also received new glasses), students from our 2004 and 2005 Photography Workshops, joined us on a field trip to Fermathe and Fort Jacques, their first trip back in four years. Both are in our Teens in Transition Program – Jean Marc continues with Classic school and Papouche is in trade school learning carpentry.
  • Our joint venture with Kole Zepol in Cité Soleil was a joy. This group helps children that can’t afford school and provides all sorts of activities for hundreds of impoverished kids. Zanmi Lakay had over 25 students in our premier Photography Workshop using disposable film cameras, followed students shooting in their neighborhood, and gave out donations.
At the conclusion, we had a party with singing and dancing and handed out chocolate milk and candy (a rare treat!). Our second Workshop will be held in February 2010.

  • With our continued collaboration with ACFFC, a program helping children of poverty in Jacmel, we had our first all digital Photography Workshop. Over 25 students, the majority having already participated in 2007 and 2008 Workshops, shot beautiful photographs of daily life throughout their town. The editing was done immediately so the children could see their photographs on a laptop and have a mentor critique their work. Families and friends were invited to our celebration with an evening slideshow, soda, and popcorn. The soundtrack was provided by the hip-hop band Trésor, a group of boys in our Teens in Transition Program.
  • Zanmi Lakay had a record seven Ti Maché sales in 2009. Many new pieces of art were purchased in Croix des Bouquet, Jacmel (much made by children), and Port-au-Prince supporting artists and their families, and in turn supporting our programs and increasing positive awareness of Haiti’s beautiful culture.
  • Zanmi Lakay programs needing special assistance in 2010:

Teens in Transition Program – General expenses for 12 youth in Jacmel and Port-au-Prince that without our help would be living on the streets.

Thanks to some special supporters, Cebien Eguei, egui.jpg a youth who was hit by a car and then beaten by police,
has had his MRI! This was the next step toward getting
his much needed surgery. We have been working on
his case for over three years, and it is wonderful to
finally report good news. Cebien still needs help with
his daily life expenses to be healthy and cared for.

    Newsletter 2008 Updates

    HeaderBarLogoNewtransparent.jpg
We had a busy and challenging year in 2008 and we’re looking forward to doing more great things together in 2009. We would like to thank our supporters, our volunteers, and all of you Ti Maché shoppers for helping us continue our programs in Haiti. The services Zanmi Lakay provides to kids on the street are made possible because of people like you. From our hearts, we thank you. Jen and Guy Pantaléon

Here are some of our 2008 accomplishments:

  • We initiated a micro-loan program beginning with two general business workshops, researched other programs and met with Fonkozé, and gave out our first two loans to street youth for satellite telephone rental businesses.
  • We visited the National Penitentiary to interview former street children that are political prisoners.
  • With support from Zanmi Lakay, Hervé, a street youth, received his electrician certificate at his June graduation and now has a job.
  • We gave out over 50 Care Bags, food staples, and school supplies to kids living on the street. We also gave food, clothing, and games to a group of homeless children, including three-year-old orphans, living in an abandoned building.
  • In our outreach Program, we continued supporting kids with school and living supplies and expenses.
  • We purchased art made by street children along with other artisans throughout Haiti to sell at our Ti Machés.
  • Our Teens in Transition program assists those kids too old for group homes and too young to be on their own. This year we paid for repairs to a motorcycle used by Wilky as a taxi, helped Frantzley go to computer school and Gregory go to driving school, and delivered yarn for boys to crochet hats that they sell on the streets.
  • Working with ACFFC, a program helping children of poverty in Jacmel, our Photography Workshops hosted two classes of 24 students that shot 30 rolls of film with disposable cameras. We are hoping to continue with this group using digital cameras in April 2009. Zanmi Lakay Newsletter strip.jpg

Zanmi Lakay has great opportunities for giving in 2009.  We can keep a child off the streets and in school for under $40.00 per month. Can you help us out? All donations are tax deductible.

Programs for the current year include:New Expense.jpg

Living expenses for 12 youth in Jacmel
and Port-au-Prince that without our help
for the last two years would be living
    on the streets.

Medical assistance for Cébien Eguei, an 18-year-old youth
    hit by a
egui.jpgcar and then beaten by police: costs unknown.

After getting a thorough diagnosis and tests, Zanmi Lakay is now working to find doctors to perform Cébien’s surgery. We have an assistant in Haiti arranging appointments, paying all charges, and accompanying Cébien to all doctor and lab visits. He needs a crutch to walk and is in constant pain, and we want him to have a chance at life.
